India's Architecture

As with India's sculpture and painting, architecture has developed many different styles over time due to religious, cultural and regional influences.  Buddhism was the earliest known influence on architecture (as well as the other two), with stupas, which are stone structures, during 563-483 BC.

Buddhism's influence dropped with the introduction of Hinduism and Jainism.  The temples built during the Hindu and Jain period were distinguished by their roofs and spires as well as their ornate carvings.

With Central Asian and Persian Muslim invaders, new styles were introduced such as mosaic, minaret and the dome.  A famous example of this type of architecture is the Taj Mahal which was started  in 1632 in Agra and finished in 1648.
