Transportation in Tokyo

Tokyo has a vast variety of options regarding transportation and an incredible network as well.  The subway (also known as the "underground") has a network of 126 miles (203 km) of rail and is the most important mode of transportation for commuters in Tokyo.

During rush hour, the subways are terribly packed as over 5 million people use them every day.  Travel by bus is another option for locals, but as it's system is rather complicated, it is not recommended for visitors.  Expressways were built in an effort to get around traffic pile-ups in town, but traffic is still disorganized and crazy, especially on the weekend.  The average speed on the expressway during a weekend tops out at 25 mph (40 kph).
