Korea is riding on the
"hallyu" movement - the globalization of Korean dramas
(K-dramas). Whether it's Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, China
or the U.S., viewers who watch Korean dramas are enamored by the
"real" acting and fascinating stories that unfold before their
eyes.
K-dramas are a refreshing
change for many, and some, like Winter Sonata, take them back to
first loves. Others like, Dae Jang Geum, tell about
history in a fascinating way with rich costumes and realistic
sets.
While some viewers may
find them too "mild" for their taste, many others will be
thrilled to find tasteful, endearing programming that reels them
in and leaves them wanting more...and more...and more....and
then they're hooked only to find that they are part of the
"hallyu" movement.
Buying
Korean Dramas
If you are
interested in buying Korean dramas, be careful where you buy
them. Buying from eBay and other sites may be less
expensive, but as the saying goes "you get what you pay for."
From personal
experience, buying off of eBay or other sites usually results in
bootleg or illegal copies of the dramas which results in poor
picture quality. Some bootleg copies also have very poor
English subtitles, ranging from jibberish to excessive foul
language. The only site we use and recommend, because of
the excellent quality of the DVDs and English subtitles, is
YesAsia.com. YesAsia.com is the only authorized distributor of
Korean DVDs in North America.
If AsianInfo has helped you in your search or interest in Korean
dramas, please use the links posted below each drama.

AsianInfo's Review of ASTA Magazine
A Treat for Korean Drama Fans
K-Drama fans aren't just from Korea, as is evidenced by the
explosion of dramas available in a multitude of languages.
But for those who read English, a new treat is in store.
YesAsia, the leading Internet source for Asian entertainment
products, has introduced ASTA Magazine.
To
be honest, the first issue I received disappointed me. Not
because of the photos, which were great, but because of the
articles. Although the few articles that were in English
were pretty good, albiet with grammatical and spelling errors,
the majority of the articles I was interested in weren't
translated. That is - they were in Korean.
But
my opinion has since changed. YesAsia asked for a review
of the magazine I received, which I gladly gave. Believe
me it was a long list of things I thought should be improved.
Since that time, the magazine has been overhauled. When I
received my July 2006 copy, and I was definitely surprised by
the changes.
The
magazine is not a "Vogue" type, in that it's an inch or
so thick, on the contrary it's about a 1/4" thick, but is larger
(approx 9" x 12" give or take a little) than standard paper in
the U.S.. It's full color, which is great when you want a
clear picture of your favorite star. The photos are crisp
and clear. Every article is in English and the articles had good
spelling and grammar, although I'll admit the text layout on
some articles could be worked on. It was packed with
information and photos about K-drama stars and I really think it
is a must have for any "die hard" drama fan.
Bottom line, if you're the type of person who just has to
know the details behind the scenes in dramas or if you just want
to know a little more about your favorite actor/actress - ASTA
TV International Edition magazine is for you.

18 Year Old Bride
(a.k.a. Sweet 18)
KBS 2003
Starring:
Yoon Jung Sook ~
Han Ji Hae (Hye)
Kwon Kyuk Jun ~
Lee Dong Jun
General Synopsis:
Living life as a
responsibility-free high school senior, Jung Sook gets into
trouble when she is caught dancing at a night club by a
district attorney. But that is just the beginning of
surprises in her life...she finds out that when she was a
baby, her grandfather set up
an arranged marriage...to an older man!
This drama is about Jung
Sook's trials in avoiding the arranged marriage while trying
to find the "true love" she literally bumped into on the
street. But ultimately, the discovery of love in an
unexpected place is sweet to watch.
A story of immaturity,
coming of age and the realization of true love.
Review:
Excellent -
but probably geared more for females than males. It's
not a serious drama, nor is it straight comedy, but a
delightful mix of the two.

Woo), heir to a huge family conglomerate - The Hankuk Group -

damage his family and his company, the couple are forced to
get engaged.
Review:
Good -
If you're a Rain/Bi fan, you definitely have to see it.
For me, it was too violent, too dark and I didn't like it.
The actors did a good job in their roles, but it was
definitely not a "must watch" drama for me.

It's a sad story of good
trying to triumph, but evil keeps staying alive - sabotaging
his every effort at a "normal" life.

physician, then ultimately the physician in charge of the
king. She was even given by the king the title "The Great

Sok-young ~ Hong Soo Hyun
Synopsis:
This
100-episode epic drama vividly depicts the life of King Dae
Jo-yeong and other heroes of the Balhae Kingdom, which dates
back 1300 years ago. The role of Dae Jo-yeong is portrayed by
actor Choi Su-jong, while the role of Yi Hae-go, Dae
Jo-yeong’s rival for the supremacy in the northern
territories, is portrayed by actor Chung Bo-seok. The two also
face off over the love of Cho-rin, a woman from the Georan
tribe, and King Bojang’s niece, Suk-yeong. The role of Cho-rin
is played by Park Ye-jin, while Suk-yeong is portrayed by Hong
Su-hyun. Several key historic figures in the drama are played
by seasoned middle-aged actors, whose masterful acting
underscores the drama’s well-knit plot. The drama drew the
spotlight even before its premiere for efforts to produce a
perfect picture, as even a special KBS video team was set up
to create true-to-life fighting scenes, such as a massive
siege warfare between Goguryeo and the Tang Dynasty created
using 3D digital characters and the scene showing the collapse

Review:
Very Good
-
This is a drama that has great balance between action and
storyline - along with spectacular sets and costumes.
It's not rated excellent only because of the casting - Choi
Soo Jong doesn't seem to be the best choice for Jang Bogo.

Fantastic Couple
a.k.a. Couple in Trouble
MBC

Starring:
Jang Chul-soo ~
Oh Ji Ho
Oh Yoo-kyung ~ Park
Han Byul
Anna Jo ~
Han Ye Seul
Billy Park ~ Kim Sung
Min
Synopsis:
Amnesia
becomes the culprit behind a drama of labor extortion under
the pretext of love!! Two people as different as night
and day, who would never even cross paths under normal
circumstances, come together in an outrageous situation and
are eventually reborn as a fantastic couple. And the
catalyst that brings about the entanglement of this unlikely
couple? That most common of all common excuses: amnesia.
Three out of every ten protagonists in TV drama shows suffer
amnesia, and the heroine of Couple in Trouble is no exception.
In this situation, the dashing hero ought naturally to rise to
the occasion by taking her in and sheltering her from harm,
but...Sorry, not this time. A cliched situation gets a
thoroughly new makeover through the use of unique characters.
A drama of labor extortion with the heroine's memory as
hostage. The singular storyline puts a twist on a
hackneyed subject, providing fresh and provocative
entertainment.

Good ~
It's been a while since I watched this (2001), but I remember
enjoying it - except for the Yu-Jin and Young-hoon angst - she
made me cringe.
