Korea is riding on the "hallyu" movement - the globalization of Korean dramas (K-dramas).  Whether it's Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, China or the U.S., viewers who watch Korean dramas are enamored by the "real" acting and fascinating stories that unfold before their eyes.

K-dramas are a refreshing change for many, and some, like Winter Sonata, take them back to first loves.  Others like, Dae Jang Geum, tell about history in a fascinating way with rich costumes and realistic sets.

While some viewers may find them too "mild" for their taste, many others will be thrilled to find tasteful, endearing programming that reels them in and leaves them wanting more...and more...and more....and then they're hooked only to find that they are part of the "hallyu" movement.

Buying Korean Dramas

If you are interested in buying Korean dramas, be careful where you buy them.  Buying from eBay and other sites may be less expensive, but as the saying goes "you get what you pay for."

From personal experience, buying off of eBay or other sites usually results in bootleg or illegal copies of the dramas which results in poor picture quality.  Some bootleg copies also have very poor English subtitles, ranging from jibberish to excessive foul language.  The only site we use and recommend, because of the excellent quality of the DVDs and English subtitles, is YesAsia.com. YesAsia.com is the only authorized distributor of Korean DVDs in North America.

If AsianInfo has helped you in your search or interest in Korean dramas, please use the links posted below each drama.  There is no additional cost to you to purchase through these links.  We need your help in improving our website and appreciate your visiting us!

AsianInfo's Review of ASTA Magazine

A Treat for Korean Drama Fans

K-Drama fans aren't just from Korea, as is evidenced by the explosion of dramas available in a multitude of languages.  But for those who read English, a new treat is in store.  YesAsia, the leading Internet source for Asian entertainment products, has introduced ASTA Magazine.

To be honest, the first issue I received disappointed me.  Not because of the photos, which were great, but because of the articles.  Although the few articles that were in English were pretty good, albiet with grammatical and spelling errors, the majority of the articles I was interested in weren't translated.  That is - they were in Korean.

But my opinion has since changed.  YesAsia asked for a review of the magazine I received, which I gladly gave.  Believe me it was a long list of things I thought should be improved. Since that time, the magazine has been overhauled.  When I received my July 2006 copy, and I was definitely surprised by the changes.

The magazine is not a "Vogue" type, in that it's an inch or so thick, on the contrary it's about a 1/4" thick, but is larger (approx 9" x 12" give or take a little) than standard paper in the U.S..  It's full color, which is great when you want a clear picture of your favorite star.  The photos are crisp and clear. Every article is in English and the articles had good spelling and grammar, although I'll admit the text layout on some articles could be worked on.  It was packed with information and photos about K-drama stars and I really think it is a must have for any "die hard" drama fan.

Bottom line, if you're the type of person who just has to know the details behind the scenes in dramas or if you just want to know a little more about your favorite actor/actress - ASTA TV International Edition magazine is for you.

18 Year Old Bride
(a.k.a. Sweet 18)
KBS 2003

Starring:

Yoon Jung Sook ~ Han Ji Hae (Hye)
Kwon Kyuk Jun ~
Lee Dong Jun

General Synopsis:

Living life as a responsibility-free high school senior, Jung Sook gets into trouble when she is caught dancing at a night club by a district attorney.  But that is just the beginning of surprises in her life...she finds out that when she was a baby, her grandfather set up an arranged marriage...to an older man!

This drama is about Jung Sook's trials in avoiding the arranged marriage while trying to find the "true love" she literally bumped into on the street.  But ultimately, the discovery of love in an unexpected place is sweet to watch.

A story of immaturity, coming of age and the realization of true love.

Review:

Excellent - but probably geared more for females than males.  It's not a serious drama, nor is it straight comedy, but a delightful mix of the two.

Bok Ku secretly blames her for his brother's accident that has now left him in a coma. He wrongly believes that she betrayed him and swears revenge. Bok Ku gets a job working as her bodyguard so that he can be close by, and inadvertently falls for her.

Eun Suk, however is stuck in an engagement against her will. Kim Jun Sung (Lee Ki Woo), heir to a huge family conglomerate - The Hankuk Group - is caught with Eun Suk, and so to avoid a scandal that could damage his family and his company, the couple are forced to get engaged.

Review:

Good - If you're a Rain/Bi fan, you definitely have to see it.  For me, it was too violent, too dark and I didn't like it.  The actors did a good job in their roles, but it was definitely not a "must watch" drama for me.

All In
SBS 2003

Starring:

Kim In Ha ~ Lee Byung Hun
Min Su Yon (Angela) ~
Song Hae Gyo
Choi Jung Won ~ Ji Sung
Suh Jin Hee ~
Park Sol Mi

Synopsis:

As a young boy, In Ha learns the "art" of cheating at cards, while helping his uncle.  He also become proficient at getting into trouble, which seems to follow him everywhere, whether he wants it or not.

To his dismay, cards seem to be his only hope in escaping the trouble of his youth, but they bring him nothing but pain.  Instead of letting this "talent" get him down, he turns his pain into perserverance and eventually.....peace?

It's a sad story of good trying to triumph, but evil keeps staying alive - sabotaging his every effort at a "normal" life.

Review:

Very Good - this would be excellent except for the violence and the "American" extras overact (i.e., can't act). This is a "must see" for men.

The role of Cho-rin is played by Park Ye-jin, while Suk-yeong is portrayed by Hong Su-hyun. Several key historic figures in the drama are played by seasoned middle-aged actors, whose masterful acting underscores the drama’s well-knit plot. The drama drew the spotlight even before its premiere for efforts to produce a perfect picture, as even a special KBS video team was set up to create true-to-life fighting scenes, such as a massive siege warfare between Goguryeo and the Tang Dynasty created using 3D digital characters and the scene showing the collapse of a mountain during the Ansi Fortress battle.

Han Sung-min ~ Lee Jong-won

Synopsis:

This is a story about the unconditional and all-forgiving love of four brothers who after years of fighting and hatred pull together and reconcile to revive their father’s business. The four brothers, each representing different generations, symbolize ordinary people living in today’s world: Han Sung-jae, the soft-hearted but incapable oldest brother in his 50s, who shoulders the heavy burden of being the head of the family; Han Sang-kyu, the accomplished but selfish second brother in his 40s, who only thinks of getting rid of his family responsibilities; Han Sung-min, the third brother in his 30s who lost his job due to corporate restructuring; and, finally, Han Jung-woo, the youngest one who has just graduated from college and is yet unemployed.

The lives of these four siblings represent the hardships of the unemployed of various generations. This series also asks the question about the genuine meaning of marriage by showing how married couples of various age groups work on their relationships to avert divorce.

Good ~ It's been a while since I watched this (2001), but I remember enjoying it - except for the Yu-Jin and Young-hoon angst - she made me cringe.

A story about love and heartbreak, sadness and self-preservation. In spite of it all, Ji Eun manages to be humorous and endearing - even when her heart is breaking.

Review:

Very Good - Although the ending was weak, the sizzle between Song Hae Gyo and Bi made the drama worth watching.
