Country Princess

Country Princess
MBC

Starring:

Eun Hee ~ Bae Du Na
In Woo ~ Shin Sung Woo
Eun Hee's first love
~ Kang Dong Won
Geum Hee ~ Kim Yoo Mi

Synopsis:

Bae Du Na (The Host, Someday) returns as a quirky, fearless single mother in the romantic comedy Country Princess (a.k.a. A Funny Wild Girl). Bae's popularity and recognition as one of Korea's top young actresses comes from her effervescent, unpretentious charm and feisty attitude - all reflected in her works. Playing a sassy mother for the second time after her 2002 film Saving My Hubby, Bae pairs up with rocker-turned-actor Shin Sung Woo (Super Rookie Ranger, Tropical Night in December) in the 2003 MBC drama Country Princess. Shin plays a cold-blooded unflinching businessman bearing a painful past. But as the plot thickens, the handsome and composed actor undergoes a drastic transformation, taking part in some of the best belly-clinching, slapstick comedy moments in the drama. In addition, fans of Kang Dong Won (M, Magic) will be delighted as the heartthrob makes his acting debut playing Bae's first love and the one who holds the key to the secret revealed towards the drama's ending.

Eun Hee (Bae Du Na) never knew a mother's love growing up as her mother only showed affection to her sister Geum Hee (Kim Yoo Mi, Romance). Nevertheless, basking in her father's love, Eun Hee grows up to be a spunky go-getter. But on one fatal night, a fire kills her father, devastating the whole family. Soon after a tycoon appears in search of his long-lost granddaughter and to everyone's amazement, the mother points to Geum Hee. Dumbfounded but ecstatic that she is after all her mother's real daughter, Eun Hee bids farewell to Geum Hee. Five years later, Eun Hee is struggling to make ends meet for her one-year-old son, twin siblings, and ailing mother. Feeling overwhelmed, she proposes a business plan to In Woo (Shin Sung Woo) whom she meets at a factory quarter. Just then, her mother decides to spill the truth about her identity...

Review:

Very Good - It's been a while since I saw this, but I remember thoroughly enjoying Bae Du Na's performance.  It was sweet and sad and, of course, funny at times.  Shin Sung Woo and Kim Yoo Mi did well in their parts as well. Definitely entertaining.

Korea is riding on the "hallyu" movement - the globalization of Korean dramas (K-dramas).  Whether it's Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, China or the U.S., viewers who watch Korean dramas are enamored by the "real" acting and fascinating stories that unfold before their eyes.

K-dramas are a refreshing change for many, and some, like Winter Sonata, take them back to first loves.  Others like, Dae Jang Geum, tell about history in a fascinating way with rich costumes and realistic sets.

While some viewers may find them too "mild" for their taste, many others will be thrilled to find tasteful, endearing programming that reels them in and leaves them wanting more...and more...and more....and then they're hooked only to find that they are part of the "hallyu" movement.

Buying Korean Dramas

If you are interested in buying Korean dramas, be careful where you buy them.  Buying from eBay and other sites may be less expensive, but as the saying goes "you get what you pay for."

From personal experience, buying off of eBay or other sites usually results in bootleg or illegal copies of the dramas which results in poor picture quality.  Some bootleg copies also have very poor English subtitles, ranging from jibberish to excessive foul language.  The only site we use and recommend, because of the excellent quality of the DVDs and English subtitles, is YesAsia.com. YesAsia.com is the only authorized distributor of Korean DVDs in North America.
