Korea is
riding on the "hallyu" movement -
the globalization of Korean dramas (K-dramas).
Whether it's Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, China
or the U.S., viewers who watch Korean dramas
are enamored by the "real" acting
and fascinating stories that unfold before
their eyes.
K-dramas
are a refreshing change for many, and some,
like Winter Sonata, take them back to first
loves. Others like, Dae Jang Geum, tell
about history in a fascinating way with rich
costumes and realistic sets.
While
some viewers may find them too
"mild" for their taste, many others
will be thrilled to find tasteful, endearing
programming that reels them in and leaves them
wanting more...and more...and more....and then
they're hooked only to find that they are part
of the "hallyu" movement.
Buying
Korean Dramas
If
you are interested in buying Korean dramas, be
careful where you buy them. Buying from
eBay and other sites may be less expensive,
but as the saying goes "you get what you
pay for."
From
personal experience, buying off of eBay or
other sites usually results in bootleg or
illegal copies of the dramas which results in
poor picture quality. Some bootleg
copies also have very poor English subtitles,
ranging from jibberish to excessive foul
language. The only site we use and
recommend, because of the excellent quality of
the DVDs and English subtitles, is YesAsia.com.
YesAsia.com is the only authorized distributor
of Korean DVDs in North America.

is caught dancing at a night club by a

This
drama is about Jung Sook's trials in
avoiding the arranged marriage while trying
to find the "true love" she
literally bumped into on the street.
But ultimately, the discovery of love in an

A
story of immaturity, coming of age and the
realization of true love.
Review:
Excellent
- but
probably geared more for females than males.
It's not a serious drama, nor is it straight
comedy, but a delightful mix of the two.

Oh
Joon ~ Jang Hyuk Young Soo ~ Kim Eun Joo Dal Lae ~ Lee Da Hae Soon Som~ Han Hye Sook
Synopsis:
Jang
Hyuk ,who made a stunning career
comeback with 2007 sleeper hit Thank
You, stars in the new SBS melodrama Bad
Guy (a.k.a. Robber). The
story paints the remarkable
transformation of a down-on-luck
swindler into a man of integrity through
his discovery of love and happiness
brought on by a naive but high-spirited
single mom. Jang Hyuk, who became both a
husband and a father in 2008, delivers a
superb performance as a shrewd
slick-talking con-man who makes a cheap
living swindling money from love-hungry
women. My Girl's feisty and
bubbly Lee Da Hae conveys much realism
in her portrayal of a headstrong widow,
earning the actress the nickname of
"queen of tears". Amidst the
dark despair, love ultimately prevails
in Bad Buy, guiding the two
wounded souls onto the path of healing.
Written by Kim Kyu Wan who previously
brought us Piano and Spring
Days, this touching drama also
provides plenty of humorous moments,
touching on such topics as homosexuality
and middle-aged romance.
When
it comes to manipulating women's hearts
(or rather their bank accounts), Oh Joon
(Jang Hyuk) knows best. Bidding farewell
to Young Soo (Kim Eun Joo) at the
airport, Oh Joon gives her a deep
passionate kiss - something to remember
him by. As she heads to the departure
gate, he pleads her not to look back, as
parting from a lover can be awfully
painful. Meanwhile, young widow Dal Lae
(Lee Da Hae) wants her mother-in-law
Soon Som (Han Hye Sook) to stop trying
to fix her up on blind dates. Happy and
content living with her 5-year-old
daughter and her mother-in-law, the last
thing on Dal Lae's mind is to get
remarried. However, at Soon Sam's
persistence, Dal Lae shows up for the
blind date but the man turns out to be a
wealthy grandfather! Flabbergasted, Dal
Lae steps hard on her accelerator and
crashes into Oh Joon's car. And lo and
behold, the slick swindler zooms in on
his next target.

Geum

Dr. Jang ~ Jang Yong
Synopsis:
The
first drama to be broadcast
simultaneously in Korea and China,
MBC's daily drama Be Strong, Geum-soon
garnered an impressive rating of 30%
for more than half a year. Circling
around the prevalent theme of family
love, this humorous, touching drama
revolves around a young widow and her
struggles in life. Reflecting on the
many contemporary faces of motherhood,
the drama takes a poignant look at
today's mothers, from a young pregnant
widow, to a widowed mother who
abandons her child, to a working
mother caught in a messy battle with
her demanding in-laws. Before stepping
into the role of empress So Seo No in Jumong,
Han Hye Jin starred as the titular
heroine in Be Strong, Geum-soon,
playing a levelheaded, young woman
whose marital bliss is cut short by
her husband's sudden death. Pregnant
and without any family support of her
own, she lives with her in-laws but is
met with insurmountable hardships.
Sporting a boorish hairstyle that
earned her the nickname of
"lettuce head", Han pairs up
with Kang Ji Hwan (Capital Scandal)
who rose to instant stardom portraying
a brash, charismatic young doctor who
falls in love with Geum Soon. Touching
on various sensitive issues
surrounding premarital sex, organ
donation, forced early retirement, and
the never-ending strife between
mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law,
with loads of lighthearted humor and
humanism, Be Strong, Geum-soon
beautifully demonstrates how one
family overcame their differences
through the power of love and
forgiveness.
Abandoned
by her mother at an early age, Geum
Soon was raised by her grandmother.
After graduating from high school, she
becomes pregnant with her first love's
child, only to see him get killed in a
car accident three days after their
wedding, leaving her and their unborn
child alone with no one to turn to.
After much debate, Geum Soon's in-laws
take her into their family. Three
years later, Geum Soon still lives
with her in-laws, raising her young
son while working at Mrs. Oh's beauty
salon to pursue her dream of becoming
a hair stylist. Romance looms in the
air when Mrs. Oh's son Jae Hee (Kang
Ji Hwan), a cocky and handsome doctor,
sets his eyes on Geum Soon. A chain of
circumstantial events lead Jae Hee's
mentor Dr. Jang (Jang Yong) to
discover that Geum Soon is actually
the daughter of his second wife who is
now in desperate need of a kidney
transplant.

Synopsis:
MBC
presents CSI: Joseon. Touted as
the Joseon period version of CSI,
Byul Soon Geom (a.k.a. Chosun
Police) raked in the highest ratings
ever in the history of Korean cable
television. First broadcast in 2005 on
MBC, then nixed from the network due to
low ratings, the series resurfaced in
2007 on an MBC-owned cable channel due
to high audience demand. Starring Ryu
Seung Ryong (Hwang Jin Yi), Park
Hyo Joo (Air City),On Joo Wan (The
Typhoon In That Summer), and Ahn Nae
Sang (Hansungbyulgok), this
thriller follows the same successful
formula as CSI, focusing on
unlocking crime mysteries through
meticulous scientific analysis and
spellbinding the audience with the
nitty-gritty details of the
investigative process. Byul Soon Geom,
however, clearly differentiates itself
from its American archetype with an
ancient historical setting, plus a
sprinkle of humanism and occasional
comic relief. Bolstered by a terrific
cast of talented actors, speedy and
dramatic storylines, ingenious plot
twists, and CSI-style camerawork,
Byul Soon Geom has been such a
success, it's already gearing up for a
second season in 2008.
In
1894, Korea was experiencing a sudden
influx of western culture and heavy
political turmoil, leading the Joseon
dynasty to undergo various social and
political reformations. During this
time, a new type of police force - the
father of Korea's modern police
structure - was founded. Healthy men
between the ages of 20 and 25 showing
good moral conduct were chosen through a
rigorous review process to form a police
task force. An undercover special task
force called Byul Soon Geom was
established to operate in secrecy.
Whilst the central police task force
took care of general civil matters, Byul
Soon Geom focused on one task: criminal
investigation. This is their story.

Review
Good.
Although I have enjoyed Choi Ji Woo's
acting in the past (my favorite being
Winter Sonata), I cannot get past
looking at the plastic surgery she's had
done. To me, it's distracting.
That aside, this was a funny, but
frustrating drama to watch. Choi
Ji Woo's comedic acting was a pleasant
surprise and she held her own again Yoon
Sang Hyun. But, while there was
humor, it was also filled with angst.
I got tired of the constant
miscommunication, but stuck it out until
the end, and I'm glad I did. A good but
not great drama.

Gook ~ Cha Seung Won
Mi Rae ~ Kim Sun Ah ~ Chu Sang Mi
~ Lee Hyung Chul ~ Yoon Se Ah
~ Lee Jong Hyuk
Synopsis:
Movie
star Cha Seung Won returns to the small
screen after a six-year absence for the
2009 SBS mini-series The City Hall.
Co-starring My Lovely Sam-Soon heroine
Kim Sun Ah, this romantic comedy with a
political twist follows the personal,
professional, and romantic journeys of
an ambitious bureaucrat with an eye on
the presidency, and a low-level civil
servant who works her way up to the
mayor's seat. With an impressive cast
that also includes Chu Sang Mi (Snow
in August), Lee Hyung Chul (Over
the Rainbow), Yoon Se Ah (Love
Marriage), and Lee Jong Hyuk (Star's
Lover), The City Hall is the
latest hit from director Shin Woo Chul
and writer Kim Eun Sook, the team behind
the Lovers series.
Protege
to one of the most powerful politicians
in the country, Jo Gook (Cha Seung Won)
is on the fast track for political
success, and indeed his ultimate goal is
to one day become President. Much
against his wishes, however, he is
abruptly sent to the deputy mayor seat
in the backwater coastal town of Inju.
Wallflower secretary Mi Rae (Kim Sun Ah)
works in the mayor's office and at about
a dozen other odd jobs that cause her to
keep crossing paths with the tall, dark,
and handsome official from the big city.
Their different backgrounds and
personalities lead to constant fighting,
but there's love in store as rural and
romantic politics heat up!
Review:
Very Good. Funny show with sad
moments. I really enjoy Kim Sun-ah's
acting and Cha Seung-won is just yummy
to watch. The transformation of Kim Sun-ah's
character is dramatic, but entertaining
to watch as is her on screen chemistry.
A surprise story element gives it an
added "awww" factor.

Synopsis:
Bae
Du Na (The Host, Someday)
returns as a quirky, fearless single
mother in the romantic comedy Country
Princess (a.k.a. A Funny Wild
Girl). Bae's popularity and
recognition as one of Korea's top young
actresses comes from her effervescent,
unpretentious charm and feisty attitude
- all reflected in her works. Playing a
sassy mother for the second time after
her 2002 film Saving My Hubby,
Bae pairs up with rocker-turned-actor
Shin Sung Woo (Super Rookie Ranger,
Tropical Night in December) in
the 2003 MBC drama Country Princess.
Shin plays a cold-blooded unflinching
businessman bearing a painful past. But
as the plot thickens, the handsome and
composed actor undergoes a drastic
transformation, taking part in some of
the best belly-clinching, slapstick
comedy moments in the drama. In
addition, fans of Kang Dong Won (M,
Magic) will be delighted as the
heartthrob makes his acting debut
playing Bae's first love and the one who
holds the key to the secret revealed
towards the drama's ending.
Eun
Hee (Bae Du Na) never knew a mother's
love growing up as her mother only
showed affection to her sister Geum Hee
(Kim Yoo Mi, Romance).
Nevertheless, basking in her father's
love, Eun Hee grows up to be a spunky
go-getter. But on one fatal night, a
fire kills her father, devastating the
whole family. Soon after a tycoon
appears in search of his long-lost
granddaughter and to everyone's
amazement, the mother points to Geum Hee.
Dumbfounded but ecstatic that she is
after all her mother's real daughter,
Eun Hee bids farewell to Geum Hee. Five
years later, Eun Hee is struggling to
make ends meet for her one-year-old son,
twin siblings, and ailing mother.
Feeling overwhelmed, she proposes a
business plan to In Woo (Shin Sung Woo)
whom she meets at a factory quarter.
Just then, her mother decides to spill
the truth about her identity...

About
500 years ago during the time of Chosun
Dynasty, Korea boasted a rigidly
hierarchical and male dominated social
structure. Set in this period,
"Jewel in the Palace" is based
on a true story about a legendary girl (Jang-Geum)
who became the first woman to be the
supreme royal physician of her times.
Despite her poor condition as a low
class girl in the male dominated
society, Jang-Geum overcame a series of
social discrimination and landed herself
as a royal cook, later becoming the
royal physician, then ultimately the
physician in charge of the king. She was
even given by the king the title
"The Great Jang-Geum". The
story of her checkered life on her
success and breakdown as well as her
love story beautifully unfold.
"Jewel in the Palace" is sure
to touch your heart.
A
testimony to all showing that almost
anything is possible with determination
and wisdom.

Synopsis:
She's
pretty, insanely rich, and moves as if
every street on this planet is a
catwalk. The perfect woman? Not so fast.
Anna Jo (Han Ye Seul of Forbidden
Love) might look like a million
dollars, but she's nearly unbearable:
she never smiles, treats everyone but
her cat Princess like a dog, and has the
very annoying and expensive tendency of
wanting to change every single piece of
furniture she sees. Enter Jang Cheol Su
(Oh Ji Ho of Super Rookie), the
owner of a very small construction
company in the suburbs. He treats every
bill like treasure, his house looks like
the aftermath of an armed robbery, and
his idea of fashion is wearing the local
soccer team's jersey. When these two get
together, they make a truly Fantastic
Couple.
Based
on the 1987 Hollywood film Overboard
starring Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, Fantastic
Couple became one of the most
popular Korean dramas of 2006 simply for
being outrageously funny. Showing once
again their comic talent, the Hong
sisters (writers of Sassy Girl
Chunhyang and My Girl) mix
sitcom tropes with interesting
characters and even a little touch of
drama to create arguably their best work
to date. The biggest surprise is perhaps
Han Ye Seul, who adapts to the two
completely different sides of her role
with great energy and spunk.

each representing different generations,
symbolize ordinary people living in
today’s world: Han Sung-jae, the
