Korea is riding on the "hallyu" movement - the globalization of Korean dramas (K-dramas).  Whether it's Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, China or the U.S., viewers who watch Korean dramas are enamored by the "real" acting and fascinating stories that unfold before their eyes.

K-dramas are a refreshing change for many, and some, like Winter Sonata, take them back to first loves.  Others like, Dae Jang Geum, tell about history in a fascinating way with rich costumes and realistic sets.

While some viewers may find them too "mild" for their taste, many others will be thrilled to find tasteful, endearing programming that reels them in and leaves them wanting more...and more...and more....and then they're hooked only to find that they are part of the "hallyu" movement.

Buying Korean Dramas

If you are interested in buying Korean dramas, be careful where you buy them.  Buying from eBay and other sites may be less expensive, but as the saying goes "you get what you pay for."

From personal experience, buying off of eBay or other sites usually results in bootleg or illegal copies of the dramas which results in poor picture quality.  Some bootleg copies also have very poor English subtitles, ranging from jibberish to excessive foul language.  The only site we use and recommend, because of the excellent quality of the DVDs and English subtitles, is YesAsia.com. YesAsia.com is the only authorized distributor of Korean DVDs in North America.

If AsianInfo has helped you in your search or interest in Korean dramas, please use the links posted below each drama.  There is no additional cost to you to purchase through these links.  We need your help in improving our website and appreciate your visiting us!

AsianInfo's Review of ASTA Magazine

A Treat for Korean Drama Fans

K-Drama fans aren't just from Korea, as is evidenced by the explosion of dramas available in a multitude of languages.  But for those who read English, a new treat is in store.  YesAsia, the leading Internet source for Asian entertainment products, has introduced ASTA Magazine.

To be honest, the first issue I received disappointed me.  Not because of the photos, which were great, but because of the articles.  Although the few articles that were in English were pretty good, albiet with grammatical and spelling errors, the majority of the articles I was interested in weren't translated.  That is - they were in Korean.

But my opinion has since changed.  YesAsia asked for a review of the magazine I received, which I gladly gave.  Believe me it was a long list of things I thought should be improved. Since that time, the magazine has been overhauled.  When I received my July 2006 copy, and I was definitely surprised by the changes.

The magazine is not a "Vogue" type, in that it's an inch or so thick, on the contrary it's about a 1/4" thick, but is larger (approx 9" x 12" give or take a little) than standard paper in the U.S..  It's full color, which is great when you want a clear picture of your favorite star.  The photos are crisp and clear. Every article is in English and the articles had good spelling and grammar, although I'll admit the text layout on some articles could be worked on.  It was packed with information and photos about K-drama stars and I really think it is a must have for any "die hard" drama fan.

Bottom line, if you're the type of person who just has to know the details behind the scenes in dramas or if you just want to know a little more about your favorite actor/actress - ASTA TV International Edition magazine is for you.

Review:

Fair - This drama is from about 10 years ago, and BYJ's acting leaves much to be desired, i.e., overacting.  It's a great item to add to your collection if only to see the difference between then and now

Seo Dong Yo
SBS 2005

Starring:

Seo Dong ~ Jo Hyun Jae
Princess Seon Hwa ~ Lee Bo Young
Mok Ra Su ~ Lee Chang Hoon
Buyeo Seon ~ Kim Young Ho

Synopsis:

Before Romeo and Juliet and Chunhyang, there was Seo Dong and Seon Hwa. The fated love between Princess Seon Hwa of the Shilla kingdom and Seo Dong, the future King Mu of the Baekje kingdom, is a classic tale set in Shakespearean lore. It is immortalized in Seo Dong Yo, or "The Ballad of Seo Dong", an old Korean folk song that spread quickly through the palace and the country during the Shilla period. This age-old story now receives new life under Lee Byung Hoon, the man behind masterpieces like Dae Jang Geum and Hur Jun. With stars Jo Hyun Jae (Love Letter) and Lee Bo Young (Mr. Good-bye) on board, Seo Dong Yo promises to be as innovative and engaging as Lee's previous historical dramas.

Seo Dong (Jo Hyun Jae) is just a commoner, a technician who grew up in Baekje's prestigious Taehaksa Institute, but his life is on the brink of extraordinary change. His love for Shilla's Princess Seon Hwa (Lee Bo Young) transforms his life forever, and he carries a secret that could alter the fate of the Baekje kingdom. The 7-disc Volume 1 set features the first 21 episodes of Seo Dong Yo, which detail Seo Dong's childhood, his first meeting with Seon Hwa, and his maturation at Taehaksa.

The second volume of Seo Dong Yo ups the ante in terms of intrigue, with Seo Dong and Mok Ra Su (Lee Chang Hoon) fighting to keep the secret of Baekje's Crown Prince intact, and Satek Giru plotting with Buyeo Seon (Kim Young Ho) to disrupt their plans.

Someday
OCN TV

Starring:

Yamaguchi Hana ~ Bae Du Na
Go Jin Pyo ~ Kim Min Joon
Kim Seok Man ~ Lee Jin Wook
 ~ Oh Yooh Ah

Synopsis:

The first Korean drama to integrate animation and live action, Someday is like no drama that has come before. Through outstanding cinematography and visual design, this groundbreaking drama beautifully lenses Korea's contemporary urban landscape and peeks into the moody, imaginative world of a comic book artist. Written by movie screenwriter Kim Hee Jae (Hanbando), Someday represents another landmark work from Yellow Film, whose other 2006 titles include the critically acclaimed Alone in Love and Freeze. A "movie-like drama" with top-end production values, Someday features film star Bae Du Na (The Host), drama favorite Kim Min Joon (Lovers in Prague, Damo), and rising stars Lee Jin Wook and Oh Yoon Ah from Alone in Love. In contrast with its fanciful images, the drama stays candid and grounded in its exploration of modern relationships and romance, presenting a story that is both painfully realistic and longingly lighthearted.

Although Korean-Japanese cartoonist Yamaguchi Hana (Bae Du Na) has found great success with her romantic comic books, she herself doesn't believe in love. Raised by her grandmother, she is content to live in her own world of writing and drawing, but one day her comic gets discontinued. Unceremoniously thrown back into the real world, Hana travels to Seoul where she meets Kim Seok Man (Lee Jin Wook), a kind-hearted private investigator with a tragic past, and Go Jin Pyo (Kim Min Joon), a doctor and ardent comic fan who observes life with a detached eye. As Hana retraces the tragic love story of her elderly neighbors with Seok Man and Jin Pyo's help, she realizes that she herself is experiencing love for the first time.

This edition comes with making of, interviews, trailers, music video, and other special features.

Something did happen in Bali… are you ready to find out what?

Review:

Excellent.  But, it could be because I'm biased.  I really enjoy watching So Ji Sub and Ha Ji Won in dramas.  Cho In Sung is very intense in this drama as a very controlling, immature person.  Overall, I went through a gamut of emotions with this drama; laughter, sadness with tears, anger, commiseration and shock.

Spring Waltz
KBS 2006

Starring:

Lee Su Ho/Yoon Jae Ha Seo Do Young
Suh Eun Young ~  Han Hyo Ju
 ~ Lee Seo Yeon
Philip ~
Daniel Henney

Synopsis:

The original flagbearer of the Korean Wave, renowned producer Yoon Suk Ho has won over fans all over Asia with his "season" dramas, starting in 2000 with the classic Tale of Autumn (a.k.a. Endless Love) starring Song Seung Heon, Song Hye Kyo, and Won Bin. He followed up in 2002 with the heartwrenching Winter Sonata starring Bae Yong Jun and Choi Ji Woo. These two dramas were phenomenally popular in Korea and throughout Asia, transforming the leads into international stars and even helping to boost Korea's tourism industry. In 2003, Song Seung Heon returned for the third installment, Summer Scent, opposite Son Yae Jin. Three years later, Yoon presented the fourth and final chapter of the seasons quartet, Spring Waltz, a quiet drama about a romance born one spring on a small, isolated island.

Left in a small island town by his gambling father, young Lee Su Ho meets the sickened Suh Eun Young, and they become good friends. Even when Su Ho's unscrupulous father steals Eun Young's family's money, the two remain steadfast in their friendship. A tragic twist of fate, however, forces them to separate, with Su Ho eventually getting adopted by a wealthy couple. Fifteen years later, Su Ho is now Yoon Jae Ha (Seo Do Young), a loner piano prodigy with a loving family and a fiancee (Lee So Yeon), and Eun Young (Han Hyo Ju) has a suitor in the suave Philip (Daniel Henney). Jae Ha and Eun Young's lives seem set in every way until the childhood sweethearts cross paths once more...

Spring Waltz features a refreshing cast of relatively new faces. Leads Seo Do Young (Emperor of the Sea) and Han Hyo Ju (My Boss, My Teacher) make a charmingly photogenic couple, while Lee So Yeon (Super Rookie) displays surprising range. Perhaps shining the most brightly is Korean American heartthrob Daniel Henney (My Lovely Sam-Soon) who shows off both his charisma and his language skills. Beautifully shot and wistfully romantic, Spring Waltz is a fitting finale to the seasonal drama series.
