Synopsis:
A
phenomenal wave of fusion " sageuk" (or periodic
drama) continues to raid the small screens in Korea. While
Jumong, Four Gods, Dae Jo Young and Yeon
Gae Somun all channeled their focus on the earlier
part of Korean history, the latest influx of sageuk sees a
trend of returning to the Joseon era. In particular, two
historical dramas, namely KBS's Hansungbulgok and
cable channel CGV's Eight Days, recently offered
their take on the reigning era of King Jeong Jo
(1776-1800), the 22nd monarch of Joseon Dynasty. MBC now
joins the bandwagon, offering their unique take on the
legacy of a popular king remembered as one of the greatest
leaders in Korean history.
Adopting
King Jeong Jo's pre-imperial name of Yi San, director Lee
Byung Hoon (Dae Jang Geum, Hur Jun) presents
Yi San. This fusion drama chronicles the life of
King Jeong Jo, who fought for commoners' rights and
bureaucratic reformation. Far exceeding the ratings of its
competitors like The King And I and Kwon Sang Woo's
Bad Love, Yi San recently spiced up its plot
by introducing a Da Vinci Code-style mystery in
which the young King Jeong Jo tries to decipher the codes
in a painting.
Lee
Seo Jin (Lovers, Damo) dives into the role
of King Jeong Jo with majestic flair alongside veteran
actor Lee Soon Jae (Sangdo, Hur Jun) who
plays the hot-tempered King Yeong Jo, Jeong Jo's
grandfather. Han Ji Min (Capital Scandal) plays
Seong Song Yeon, a palace maid who captivates King Jeong
Jo's heart, and later becomes his concubine.
Interestingly, almost half of the main cast are from
director Lee's 2003 mega hit Dae Jang Geum
including Park Eun Hye, Gyeun Mi Ri, Lee Jong Soo, raising
the bar of expectations for viewers and critics alike.

Korea is
riding on the "hallyu" movement -
the globalization of Korean dramas (K-dramas).
Whether it's Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, China
or the U.S., viewers who watch Korean dramas
are enamored by the "real" acting
and fascinating stories that unfold before
their eyes.
K-dramas
are a refreshing change for many, and some,
like Winter Sonata, take them back to first
loves. Others like, Dae Jang Geum, tell
about history in a fascinating way with rich
costumes and realistic sets.
While
some viewers may find them too
"mild" for their taste, many others
will be thrilled to find tasteful, endearing
programming that reels them in and leaves them
wanting more...and more...and more....and then
they're hooked only to find that they are part
of the "hallyu" movement.
Buying
Korean Dramas
If
you are interested in buying Korean dramas, be
careful where you buy them. Buying from
eBay and other sites may be less expensive,
but as the saying goes "you get what you
pay for."
From
personal experience, buying off of eBay or
other sites usually results in bootleg or
illegal copies of the dramas which results in
poor picture quality. Some bootleg
copies also have very poor English subtitles,
ranging from jibberish to excessive foul
language. The only site we use and
recommend, because of the excellent quality of
the DVDs and English subtitles, is YesAsia.com.
YesAsia.com is the only authorized distributor
of Korean DVDs in North America.
