Korea
is riding on the
"hallyu"
movement - the
globalization of
Korean dramas
(K-dramas).
Whether it's
Singapore, Malaysia,
Japan, China or the
U.S., viewers who
watch Korean dramas
are enamored by the
"real"
acting and
fascinating stories
that unfold before
their eyes.
K-dramas
are a refreshing
change for many, and
some, like Winter
Sonata, take them
back to first loves.
Others like, Dae
Jang Geum, tell
about history in a
fascinating way with
rich costumes and
realistic sets.
While
some viewers may
find them too
"mild" for
their taste, many
others will be
thrilled to find
tasteful, endearing
programming that
reels them in and
leaves them wanting
more...and
more...and
more....and then
they're hooked only
to find that they
are part of the
"hallyu"
movement.
Buying
Korean Dramas
If
you are interested
in buying Korean
dramas, be careful
where you buy them.
Buying from eBay and
other sites may be
less expensive, but
as the saying goes
"you get what
you pay for."
From
personal experience,
buying off of eBay
or other sites
usually results in
bootleg or illegal
copies of the dramas
which results in
poor picture
quality. Some
bootleg copies also
have very poor
English subtitles,
ranging from
jibberish to
excessive foul
language. The
only site we use and
recommend, because
of the excellent
quality of the DVDs
and English
subtitles, is
YesAsia.com.
YesAsia.com is the
only authorized
distributor of
Korean DVDs in North
America.

Synopsis:
Following
2005's CCTV period
drama The
Mischievous Princess,
Korean actress and
singer Jang Na Ra
graces Chinese
television screens
again with the
romantic drama Good
Morning Shanghai.
Jang, who enjoys great
popularity in China,
plays the role she
does best, a sassy,
headstrong, and
lovable girl similar
to her characters on My
Love Patzzi and The
Successful Story of a
Bright Girl. This
time her co-star is
Hong Kong heartthrob
Shawn Yue (Invisible
Target), making
for a perfectly
photogenic pairing.
The drama's cast also
includes Yang Xue and
Yan Kuan.
You
Haoyun (Jang Na Ra) is
a cute and
kind-hearted girl, if
a little frank and
absentminded. Even
though her name means
"fortunate",
in reality bad luck
seems to accompany her
wherever she goes. As
a child, her brother
passed away trying to
rescue her, leaving a
wound in her family
that never healed.
Haoyun finally musters
up the courage to move
out on her own, but
then she loses all her
money in a scam.
Wandering the streets
with nowhere to go,
she runs into a group
of street louts, but
at that moment Wang
(Shawn Yue) appears
and saves her. The
rich, handsome, and
emotionally detached
Wang ends up hiring
Haoyun as his son's
nanny, bringing new
and unexpected sparks
into both their lives.

Synopsis:
The
biggest Korean film of
the year comes to DVD!
Released in July 2006,
Bong Jun Ho's monster
film The Host
ripped through the box
office like a force of
nature. Breaking every
record on the book, The
Host became the
first Korean film to
sell 13 million
tickets, surpassing
the all-time record
held by King and
The Clown. It
topped the box office
for five consecutive
weeks, writing a new
page in Korean cinema
history.
Although
monster films have a
strong tradition in
Japan and the U.S.,
they're typically
relegated to bargain
bins in Korea. When
Bong Jun Ho, the
critically acclaimed
director of smash hit Memories
of Murder,
announced he was
making a monster
movie, the film
industry was unsure of
how to react. But this
was the film Bong was
always meant to make. Bong
rounded together an
illustrious cast led
by Song Kang Ho (JSA),
Byun Hee Bong (Crying
Fist), Bae Du Na (Sympathy
for Mr. Vengeance),
and Park Hae Il (Rules
of Dating).
Meanwhile, a monstrous
budget and
state-of-the-art CG
technology gave birth
to the proverbial
beast. The result: The
Host not only
conquered the box
office, it garnered
almost universal
acclaim, winning over
critics and moviegoers
alike from Cannes to
Korea. More than just
a creature feature, The
Host delves into a
raw, suspenseful world
of unspeakable
horrors, politics,
conflicts, and
emotions in one
family's relentless
fight against the
monster that rose from
the Han River.
Hee
Bong's (Byun Hee Bong)
family is the epitome
of dysfunctional. His
son Nam Il (Park Hae
Il) went from
promising college
graduate to cursing,
molotov-throwing
problem child; his
daughter Nam Joo (Bae
Du Na) could have
become an archery
star, but is now just
the one who calms
everyone down when
things get heated. The
eldest son, Gang Du
(Song Kang Ho) spends
his days running a
snack stall near the
Han River, and his
only hope, indeed the
family's hope, is on
the shoulders of his
young daughter, Hyun
Seo (Ko Ah Sung).
Unbeknownst to
everyone, however, a
horrible monster has
been growing in the
polluted waters of Han
River, and it snatches
Hyun Seo from their
life. Unable to get
any help from the
authorities, the
family is determined
to get Hyun Seo back
on their own, no
matter what it takes.
Review:
Very
Good -To
be honest, I hate
monster/sci-fi movies.
Give me a comedy, a
love story, anything
light and funny.
My Korean significant
other told me I just
"had" to
watch this movie.
I assumed he knew my
aversion to movies of
this type, but I was
wrong. After my
blissful ignorance in
the beginning scenes,
I became aware this
was not a comedy but a
monster movie.
In spite of this
discovery, I was
riveted to the screen.
There was suspense,
drama and yes, comedy
- this movie would not
have been the same
with any other cast.
They were phenomenal
in their roles and
made this movie one I sat
riveted watching to
the end (ok, so I
covered my eyes a few
times, I know I'm a
wimp!).

Based

were also adapted for

SBS drama I Love
You cheekily
explores the trials of
romance, marriage,
pregnancy, and

bullet when Young Hee

pregnant after a
one-night stand.
Fourteen years younger

caddish wannabe rocker

character of an
endearingly brassy and
bumbling country girl,
complete with a
spot-on country

Synopsis:
Returning
from his highly
acclaimed drama series
Time Between Dog
And Wolf, Korean
heartthrob Lee Jun Ki
stars in Iljimae,
a fusion historical
drama set during the
Joseon dynasty that
chronicles the life of
a chivalrous robber
known as "Iljimae".
Unlike other outlaw
heroes such as Robin
Hood and Hong Gil Dong
who were accompanied
by a band of
followers, Iljimae
likes to play solo.
Featuring a
star-studded cast that
includes Han Hyo Joo (Spring
Waltz), Lee Young
Ah (Golden Bride),
and Park Si Who (What
Planet Are You From?),
this charming
swashbuckler far
exceeded the
viewership ratings of
Son Ye Jin's Spotlight
and Kim Ji Soo's Woman
of the Sun which
competed in the same
timeslot. Based
loosely on the
best-selling comic
book by Ko Woo Young,
the drama strikes a
cool balance between
comedy, action, and
drama, working in
plenty of offbeat
humor (much of which
comes from modern-day
spoofs) and offering
some genuine food for
thoughts about love,
family, and marriage.
Jaunty
and fearless, Ryung
(Lee Jun Ki) roams the
market street by day
and robs corrupt
government officials
by night, but his
intentions are
anything but malicious
as he distributes the
stolen goods to the
poor struggling
commoners. People call
him "Iljimae",
the faceless elusive
hero who leaves a
unique signature (a
branch of a plum
blossom tree) behind
at every robbery
scene. He's the most
wanted man in the
country, but that's
not the only trouble
he's facing. His
storybook romance with
government official's
daughter Eun Chae (Han
Hyo Joo) is soon
discovered by the
Imperial Guard who has
held deep affection

time. And standing in
his shadows is Bong

malpractice and
powerplay at a
university hospital,
contrasting the
paths and
personalities of two
doctors played by
Kim Myung Min (The
Immortal Lee Soon
Shin) and Lee
Seon Gyun (Loveholic).
Inside the White
Tower was a
critical and ratings
hit in South Korea,
with Ahn Pan Seok
winning Best
Producer and Kim
Myung Min beating
out some very strong
competition for the
Best Leading Actor
statuette at the
43rd Baeksang
Awards. The drama
stands out amongst
the current wave of
lightweight
offerings with its
intelligent,
well-written, and
uncompromising
story, situating the
little known
wheeling and dealing
of medicine in a
tight and
interesting tangle
of deception,
friendship, and
romance. What really
goes on Inside
the White Tower?
You may not want to
know.
Brilliant
and ambitious,
assistant professor
Jang Joon Hyuk (Kim
Myung Min) is a
rising star in the
Myeongin University
Hospital surgery
department. His
knowledge and
expertise is
undeniable, but his
cavalier confidence
and cold personality
has earned him more
than a few enemies
including the
department head.
While Jang's drive
stems from a desire
for success and
advancement, fellow
doctor Choi Do Young
(Lee Seon Gyun) is
committed to the
well-being of his
patients, leading to
frequent clashes
with the practices
and personnel within
the hospital. With
the head of the
surgery department
retiring, Jang seems
to be the clear
successor until a
new rival emerges in
the form of Noh Min
Guk (Cha In Pyo),
who has the backing
of the department
head. Jang, however,
is determined to win
at all costs.

Good
- It
was an interesting
drama. An artistic
drama that probably
didn't translate as
well as it could
have considering
what was being said

poetic. I
didn't like that it
portrayed a porn

cheapened the drama
for me.

Synopsis:
MBC's
hugely popular Jumong
is the first of a
wave of Korean
historical dramas
dealing with the
Goguryeo Dynasty
(approximately 37
BC-AD 668). Written
by veteran Choi Wan
Gyu (Hur Jun,
Sang Do, and All

Hyung Soo (Damo),
Jumong is one
of Korea's most
impressive and
popular historical
dramas. It dominated
television screens
during its
broadcast,
attracting
viewership ratings
of over 40% in
Korea.
Jumong
is the name of the
legendary founder of
Goguryeo, King
Dongmyeongseong. The
story starts with
the conflict between
Gojoseon, an ancient
Korean kingdom, and
Han Chinese forces,
eventually leading
to a fragmented
Korean Peninsula.
Hero-in-the-making
Jumong (Song Il
Kook, Emperor of
the Sea) is born
in this time of
chaos and struggle
in the little
independent state of
Buyeo. He quickly
finds himself the
most unlikely of
princes and the
victim of a rivalry
with his brother Dae
So (Kim Seung Soo, A
Million Roses).
He is forced to
choose between the
boyish charm of
young merchant So
Seo No (Han Hye Jin;
Be Strong, Geum

innocent smile of Bu
Yeong (Im So Young),
a servant he's known
for years. Through
dangerous trials and
painful lessons of
the heart, Jumong
must rise to the
occasion to unite
the land and bring
peace to his people.

immigrants and
laborers from
third-world
countries. Winner of
the drama category
at the 2007 Asia

the critically
acclaimed drama
focuses on the
discriminatory
glances toward
Korsians (a term
used for the
offspring of Korean
and Asian ethnicity
mixture) through the
eyes of a 9-year old
boy named Kamgeun,
played by Kim Ji
Han. A half Filipino
and half-Korean, Kim
shared his painful
experience living as
an interracial child
in Korea in a highly
publicized interview
at the same time
that Hines Ward, a
Korsian-American

Unfortunately, his

was very young.
Luckily, Kamgeun's

a hard time
accepting her
mixed-ethnicity son.
Sensing this,
Kamgeun feels
discouraged and
unloved, and behaves
as any kid his age

It
brought us to Paris
and Prague, became a
leading franchise in
the Korean Wave, and
made even bigger
stars out of Kim
Jung Eun, Park Shin
Yang, Jeon Do Yeon
and Kim Ju Hyuk. The
Lovers series
(Lovers in Paris
and Lovers in
Prague) is one
of the few able to
maintain its
popularity over the
years, something
which was confirmed
once again when the
third and possibly
final installment, Lovers,
recorded ratings of
over 25% on its last
episode. As a final
icing on the cake,
Kim Jung Eun,
heroine of Lovers
in Paris,
returns to conclude
the series in great
fashion. Kim plays
Mi Joo, a plastic
surgeon who first
mistakes gangster
Kang Jae (Lee Seo
Jin of Damo)
for her
brother-in-law, and
later falls in love
with him. Also
notable is the
return to the small
screen of Kim Kyu Ri
(Roses and
Beansprouts),
and another fine
performance from
Jung Chan (Golden
Apple, Road
Movie).
In
addition to producer
Shin Woo Cheol and
writer Kim Eun Sook,
SBS even brought
back the music
director of the
previous two
installments of the Lovers
series, Park Se Jun
of Love and
Ambition and My
Lovely Fool.
Production was
handled by Han Sung
Ho, who has worked
with Suh Young Eun

all the instrumental
tracks in the album,
this OST also
features the
"Queen of

Suh Young Eun, along
with ballad

Jang Hyuk.
