The
Snow Queen
KBS 2007
Starring:
Tae Woong ~ Hyun
Bin
Jung Kyu ~ Lee
Sun Ho
Bo Ra ~ Sung Yu Ri
Synopsis:
After
winning hearts throughout Asia with his performance in My
Lovely Sam-Soon, Hyun Bin shows another side of
himself in the highly anticipated KBS drama The Snow
Queen. Based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale
of the same name, The Snow Queen is helmed by Lee
Hyung Min, director of hit dramas Winter Sonata and
Sorry, I Love You. To his latest work, Lee brings
that same compelling mix of heartwarming romance and
heartbreaking tragedy with distinctive aesthetics and a
lingering atmosphere. Hyun Bin, departing from his
roguishly boyish image, adopts a more rugged look to
portray a lonely, troubled boxer. Opposite Hyun Bin is
former FinK.L. member Sung Yu Ri (Prince's First Love,
One Fine Day) who has slowly come unto her own as
an actress.
Both
uncommonly gifted in math, high school prodigies Tae Woong
(Hyun Bin) and Jung Kyu (Lee Sun Ho) initially don't get
along, but they soon become best friends. Together they
experience the growing pains of adolescence, sharing their
dreams and anxieties. When Jung Kyu's life is tragically
cut short after Tae Woong wins over him in a math
competition, life as Tae Woong knows it also ends. Eight
years later, Tae Woong, now going by the name Deuk Gu, is
a third-rate boxer struggling to make ends meet. Unable to
get over Jung Kyu's death, he continues to punish himself
for the past by living in despondency, desperately trying
to fulfill his friend's dream. But then he meets Bo Ra
(Sung Yu Ri), a wealthy and petulant young woman with a
heart as cold as his.

Korea is
riding on the "hallyu" movement -
the globalization of Korean dramas (K-dramas).
Whether it's Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, China
or the U.S., viewers who watch Korean dramas
are enamored by the "real" acting
and fascinating stories that unfold before
their eyes.
K-dramas
are a refreshing change for many, and some,
like Winter Sonata, take them back to first
loves. Others like, Dae Jang Geum, tell
about history in a fascinating way with rich
costumes and realistic sets.
While
some viewers may find them too
"mild" for their taste, many others
will be thrilled to find tasteful, endearing
programming that reels them in and leaves them
wanting more...and more...and more....and then
they're hooked only to find that they are part
of the "hallyu" movement.
Buying
Korean Dramas
If
you are interested in buying Korean dramas, be
careful where you buy them. Buying from
eBay and other sites may be less expensive,
but as the saying goes "you get what you
pay for."
From
personal experience, buying off of eBay or
other sites usually results in bootleg or
illegal copies of the dramas which results in
poor picture quality. Some bootleg
copies also have very poor English subtitles,
ranging from jibberish to excessive foul
language. The only site we use and
recommend, because of the excellent quality of
the DVDs and English subtitles, is YesAsia.com.
YesAsia.com is the only authorized distributor
of Korean DVDs in North America.
