Tomato

Tomato
KBS 2004

Starring:

Lee Han Yi ~ Kim Hee Seon
Cha Seung Joon ~ Kim Suk Hoon
Yoon Sae Ra ~
Kim Ji Young

Synopsis:

One of the most popular Korean dramas ever comes to DVD with English subtitles for the first time!

With mistaken identities, conniving vixens, love triangles, disapproving parents, Cinderella allusions, and co-habitation romance, Tomato is everything you can expect from a Korean drama - and more! If the plot and sentiments seem rather familiar, it is only because Tomato came before the rest. Starring top actress Kim Hee Seon (Sad Love Story) and the handsome Kim Suk Hoon (Tube), this classic Korean drama reached astounding ratings of 53% during its original broadcast on SBS in 1999. An entertaining mix of lighthearted romance and serious melodrama, Tomato was written by Lee Hee Myung, who would later go on to create hit dramas like Bright Girl's Success and My Fair Lady.

The bright and cheerful Lee Han Yi (Kim Hee Seon) moves from Jeju to the big city to pursue her dream of becoming a shoe designer. By chance, she saves lawyer and shoe company heir Cha Seung Joon (Kim Suk Hoon) after he gets hit by a car. When Seung Joon later mistakes Han Yi's friend Yoon Sae Ra (Kim Ji Young) as his savior, Sae Ra goes along with the mistake, hoping to win his affections. But fate works in strange ways, and Han Yi ends up renting the same place with Seung Joon and working at his estranged mother's shoe company. The reluctant roommates initially bicker incessantly, but grow closer over time. The jealous and calculating Sae Ra, however, is determined to sabotage both their relationship and Han Yi's career.

Korea is riding on the "hallyu" movement - the globalization of Korean dramas (K-dramas).  Whether it's Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, China or the U.S., viewers who watch Korean dramas are enamored by the "real" acting and fascinating stories that unfold before their eyes.

K-dramas are a refreshing change for many, and some, like Winter Sonata, take them back to first loves.  Others like, Dae Jang Geum, tell about history in a fascinating way with rich costumes and realistic sets.

While some viewers may find them too "mild" for their taste, many others will be thrilled to find tasteful, endearing programming that reels them in and leaves them wanting more...and more...and more....and then they're hooked only to find that they are part of the "hallyu" movement.

Buying Korean Dramas

If you are interested in buying Korean dramas, be careful where you buy them.  Buying from eBay and other sites may be less expensive, but as the saying goes "you get what you pay for."

From personal experience, buying off of eBay or other sites usually results in bootleg or illegal copies of the dramas which results in poor picture quality.  Some bootleg copies also have very poor English subtitles, ranging from jibberish to excessive foul language.  The only site we use and recommend, because of the excellent quality of the DVDs and English subtitles, is YesAsia.com. YesAsia.com is the only authorized distributor of Korean DVDs in North America.
