Korea is riding on the
"hallyu" movement - the globalization of Korean dramas
(K-dramas). Whether it's Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, China
or the U.S., viewers who watch Korean dramas are enamored by the
"real" acting and fascinating stories that unfold before their
eyes. K-dramas are a refreshing
change for many, and some, like Winter Sonata, take them back to
first loves. Others like, Dae Jang Geum, tell about
history in a fascinating way with rich costumes and realistic
sets.
While some viewers may
find them too "mild" for their taste, many others will be
thrilled to find tasteful, endearing programming that reels them
in and leaves them wanting more...and more...and more....and
then they're hooked only to find that they are part of the
"hallyu" movement.
Buying
Korean Dramas
If you are
interested in buying Korean dramas, be careful where you buy
them. Buying from eBay and other sites may be less
expensive, but as the saying goes "you get what you pay for."
From personal
experience, buying off of eBay or other sites usually results in
bootleg or illegal copies of the dramas which results in poor
picture quality. Some bootleg copies also have very poor
English subtitles, ranging from jibberish to excessive foul
language. The only site we use and recommend, because of
the excellent quality of the DVDs and English subtitles, is
YesAsia.com. YesAsia.com is the only authorized distributor of
Korean DVDs in North America.

Country Princess
MBC 2003
Starring:
Eun Hee ~ Bae Du Na
In Woo ~ Shin Sung Woo
Eun Hee's first love ~ Kang Dong Won
Geum Hee ~ Kim Yoo Mi
Synopsis:
Bae Du
Na (The Host, Someday) returns as a quirky,
fearless single mother in the romantic comedy Country
Princess (a.k.a. A Funny Wild Girl). Bae's
popularity and recognition as one of Korea's top young
actresses comes from her effervescent, unpretentious charm and
feisty attitude - all reflected in her works. Playing a sassy
mother for the second time after her 2002 film Saving My
Hubby, Bae pairs up with rocker-turned-actor Shin Sung Woo
(Super Rookie Ranger, Tropical Night in December)
in the 2003 MBC drama Country Princess. Shin plays a
cold-blooded unflinching businessman bearing a painful past.
But as the plot thickens, the handsome and composed actor
undergoes a drastic transformation, taking part in some of the
best belly-clinching, slapstick comedy moments in the drama.
In addition, fans of Kang Dong Won (M, Magic)
will be delighted as the heartthrob makes his acting debut
playing Bae's first love and the one who holds the key to the
secret revealed towards the drama's ending.
Eun Hee
(Bae Du Na) never knew a mother's love growing up as her
mother only showed affection to her sister Geum Hee (Kim Yoo
Mi, Romance). Nevertheless, basking in her father's
love, Eun Hee grows up to be a spunky go-getter. But on one
fatal night, a fire kills her father, devastating the whole
family. Soon after a tycoon appears in search of his long-lost
granddaughter and to everyone's amazement, the mother points
to Geum Hee. Dumbfounded but ecstatic that she is after all
her mother's real daughter, Eun Hee bids farewell to Geum Hee.
Five years later, Eun Hee is struggling to make ends meet for
her one-year-old son, twin siblings, and ailing mother.
Feeling overwhelmed, she proposes a business plan to In Woo
(Shin Sung Woo) whom she meets at a factory quarter. Just
then, her mother decides to spill the truth about her
identity...
Review:
Very Good
- It's been a while since I saw this, but I remember
thoroughly enjoying Bae Du Na's performance. It was
sweet and sad and, of course, funny at times. Shin Sung
Woo and Kim Yoo Mi did well in their parts as well. Definitely
entertaining.

My Destiny
Starring:
Jia Ying ~ Yoon Joo Young
Tang Hao ~ Calvin Zheng Guolin
Zhou Lan ~ Fu Xinyin
Hong Ming ~ Shim Ji Ho
Synopsis:
Acclaimed filmmaker Park Cheol Su presents a fresh variation
on the Korean melodrama in the Chinese-Korean co-production
TV drama My Destiny. Set in both China and South
Korea, the drama tells a compelling tale about love and
betrayal amid the dreams of youth and the loss of innocence.
Newcomer Korean actress Yoon Joo Young, popular Chinese
actor Calvin Zheng Guolin (Family, The Legend of Hero),
and Korean actor Shim Ji Ho, who starred in director Park's
film Green Chair as well as hits like Stained
Glass and A Frozen Flower, form a confused
romantic triangle in this heartwrenching drama. Other than
the unique cast and production background, My Destiny
stands out from other series with the topic of
cross-cultural romance and unique storytelling devices like
using alternate dream sequences to reveal the characters'
true sides and unvoiced confrontations.
Chinese
college students Jia Ying (Yoon Joo Young) and Tang Hao (Zheng
Guolin) are the perfect couple in everyone's eyes. Both
coming from humble family backgrounds, they've persevered
together in the city, and look ahead to marriage and better
days after graduation. Things seem to be going well when Jia
Ying finds a promising job as a translator for a Korean firm
and Tang Hao enters the corporate world, but the two begin
to drift apart. Blinded by his ambitions, Tang Hao starts to
change after meeting willful rich girl Zhou Lan (Fu Xinyin),
who's determined to steal Tang Hao away. Purehearted Jia
Ying tries hard to hold on to love in the face of Tang Hao's
lies, and a burgeoning relationship with her kind boss, Hong
Ming (Shim Ji Ho), who stays by her side through the tough
times.

Song Kang Ho
General Synopsis:
Drawing over five million admissions at the box office,
blockbuster thriller Secret Reunion is the biggest
and arguably best Korean movie of 2010 thus far. After
garnering much attention and accolade for Rough Cut,
up-and-coming director Jang Hoon takes his gripping themes
of brotherhood and rivalry to a larger stage in his

actors, Song Kang Ho (Thirst) and Kang Dong Won (Jeon
Woo Chi) deliver both tense action and aching humanity

Sunlight
Upon Me
MBC 2002
Starring:
Dong Seok ~ Ryu Si Won
Yeon Woo ~ Kim So Yeon
General Synopsis:
Broadcast in 2002, Sunlight Upon Me stars two of
Korea's top stars - Ryu Si Won (Beautiful Days,
Wedding) and Kim So Yeon (The Grand Chef) - in an
inspiring melodrama about a small-town girl who finds
success as a home shopping host. Contrary to her stylish,
ice-queen character in All About Eve, Kim plays a
plucky, down-to-earth go-getter who after giving up her
college education moves to the big city in search of her
dreams. Playing her love interest is the gentle-spirited Ryu
who portrays a top-notch lawyer. Sunlight Upon Me not
only served as guilty pleasure for the many who occasionally
catch themselves making impulse purchases through late-night
infomercials but also generated huge interest in the
profession.
Frugal
and hard-working Yeon Woo (Kim So Yeon) makes ends meet
working in fisheries in the small town of Sokcho. Her life
makes a dramatic turn when Dong Seok (Ryu Si Won), an
in-house lawyer for a large home shopping corporation,
travels down to her hometown to perform some damage control
regarding litigation filed against the company by Sokcho's
fishery union. His negotiation with the local union soon
turns into a confrontational brawl, and Dong Seok, out of
fit, jumps into the water. It is Yeon Woo who saves him and
takes him to her house for a change of clothes. Before
leaving, Dong Seok offers to return her favor when she
visits Seoul, an offer she soon takes up as she begins a
turbulent new life and romance in the big city.
Comes
with 20-minute previews of Forever Yours, One Fine
Day, Secret, and Truth.
