Korean Choral Music

Choral music has enjoyed one of the strongest followings in Korea. The quality of these performances has also been internationally recognized. For example, Korea won first prize at the World Chorus Competition, held in Vienna, Austria, and has since become the host for the competition in 1997.

The first professional chorus, the National Chorus, was formed in 1973, which was followed by the Seoul City Chorus in 1978 and numerous other privately operated choruses. In addition, there are literally hundreds of amateur choirs in Korea, all of which offer excellent performances. Yun Hak-won, Yu Pyong-mu as well as Na Yong-su of the National Chorus, are some of the nation's foremost choral conductors whose contributions to the field of Korean choral musical have been noteworthy.
