Hallim Park with Hyeopje Cave & Ssangyong Cave
A Nature Park With an Exotic Atmosphere

Blessed with wonderful plants of all sorts, Hallim Park is truly a plantation paradise. Its tall palm trees and the thick pine forest give you the impression of being in a tropical region.
The park's extensive ground of 90,000 pyeong is occupied with the 'Subtropical Garden' with rare subtropical plants and over 2,000 wild plants of Jeju Island, 'Jeju Rock Potted Plant Garden' where you can see over 500 potted plants and 100 types of natural rocks, 'Jaeam Folk Village' which restores Jeju Island's traditional thatched houses, and 'Jaeam Rock Center' displaying 500 precious rocks.

The biggest attraction of Hallim Park is the 1700m-long 'Hyeopje Cave' and 'Ssangyong Cave' - the only 2 dimensional compound cave in the whole world.
Designated as Natural Monument No.236, these two caves show the mysterious process of how limewater turned the black lava cave (formed 2,500,000 yrs ago as Mt. Halla's volcano erupted) into a golden lime cave. Although it is originally a lava cave, it has a growing stalagmite and stalactite (which can only be seen in lime caves) which gives the cave high academic value and makes it one of the three mysterious and wondrous caves in the world.

Mokseokwon
A Park where the trees and rocks are alive

A stone with a story, a tree with a theme...

Mokseokwon consists of a forest that is 3,000pyeong in area, displaying Jeju Island's native rocks and old trees that are very unique in shape. The rocks and trees, as the main attraction of the park, have a story each and are full of life and spirit.

There are approximately 20 old trees with such themes as 'Snail Couple', 'Swan Lake', 'Long Journey', and 'Outcry'. Old trees are the roots of a subtropical plant called 'Jorok Tree' that grow wild on the highlands 700m south of Mt. Halla. These trees are so interesting in shape, each can be a sculpture piece itself. Buried underground for a long period, these old trees appear to have no life, but they actually possess strong life forces around the roots.

Designated as Jeju Island local monument, the rarity of each of these trees have been widely recognized.
The southeast corner of Mokseokwon displays rocks with the theme 'Gabdori's Life' that teach a moral lesson on the human emotions.

Mt. Halla
Mountain of mysterious beauty

Mt. Halla is one of the 3 most famous mountains in Korea.  As the tallest mountain in South Korea, Mt. Halla rises 1,950m above sea level. It can be seen from anywhere in Jeju Island. Mt. Halla has a spectacular view from any angle and its beauty in each of the four seasons is so different, yet equally magnificent, it is a mystery in itself.

Known as the 'the mountain tall enough to draw in the Galaxy', at the top of Mt. Halla is a lake with a diameter of 500m called Baekrokdam Lake, that was formed by a volcanic eruption 25,000 years ago. 360 parasite volcanoes of all sizes surround this lake.  Baekrokdam Lake is known as where wizards / immortals from the sky came to play with a white deer.

It is covered with snow up until early summer, forming an exquisite sight you cannot experience elsewhere. Climb up and walk around the mound of the crater(4km in diameter), and you can see the entire Jeju island at once, it almost feels as if you had actually traveled around the island.

As you climb up Mt. Halla, you will feel warm, cool, hot and cold all at once because the mountain shows all four seasons in a single day. It is also a paradise of internationally rare and endangered plants.

Various types of vegetation grow throughout the mountain. Plus, there are over 70 kinds of rare plants that can only be seen in Jeju Island, such as the Jeju Hanran Orchid and Halla Songi Plant.

However, it is quite difficult to climb up, for the shortest route is 3.7km long and is mostly composed of steep stairs. The route takes an hour each way.

Compared to other courses, the Gwaneumsa route is steep and long (6.8km) and takes 3 hours each way to and from the summit. Seongpanak has the longest route (7.3km) but has an even path. From the top, you can see the middle region as well as Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak at a glance. The route takes 3 hours each way. Keep in mind that from 'Jindalle shelter' to the summit, there is no water available.

Prepare enough drinking water supply because the rain is sinks into the ground immediately and water usually does not run in most rivers
There may be extreme changes in weather so carry necessary equipment in preparation of bad weather.

Also, temperature varies along the altitude so be sure to take extra clothing along. Cooking and camping-out is allowed only in the designated camping area (Gwaneumsa can accommodate up to a 1,000 people).

Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak
Where the sunrise is beautiful

Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak is the 182m-high volcano at the end of Seongsan peninsula, 48km east from Jeju City.

The huge crater on the sharp cliff forms a grassy plain and 99 rocky mountain peaks on top of the crater form a circle that looks like a massive crown. The name Ilchulbong comes from its famous view of the sunrise. Since early times, the wondrous scene of the sunrise from Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak had been chosen as the best out of 10 scenic spots in Jeju Island.

One cannot help but to exclaim over the sight of the sun rising above the horizon, bathing the ocean in red light. The sandy beach and the green grass gives the view greater radiance. However, due to unstable weather, it is not so easy to see the beautiful sunrise.

The Teddy Bear Museum
Bring back childhood memories

With the universally beloved teddy bears as the main theme, this museum displays over 1,200 stuffed bears.

Teddy of 'teddy bear' comes from the nickname of the 26th president of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt. The first teddy bear was created in 1902, by a storeowner in New York on account of the story that President Roosevelt let go of a cub that was brought forth by a presidential aide who felt sorry for the president for failing to catch as single bear in a bear hunt. The aide suggested that Roosevelt shoot the cub but the president declared it an unjust act.
The Teddy Bear Museum is 3,000 pyeong in size and is divided into 2 galleries (art and history hall), displaying teddy bears from all over the world that are up to a 100 years old. There are various sights and attractions for family, friends, and couples, including cafes, restaurants, a teddy bear shop, and also a nice outdoor park/garden where you can see the Jungmun beach.

There is a park (3,000 pyeong in area) where you can take pictures with various teddy bear sets. Starting from the circular plaza, which recreates a scene from the 50's(with Pontiacs and typical architecture of the time), you will see amusing sets of teddy bears all over the park - polar bears taking a shower in the water fountain, a family of teddy bears enjoying a barbecue picnic. Starting with the teddy bear museum in Florida, there are approximately 10 teddy bear museums in the world, including ones in Japan, England, Germany, and Switzerland. This is the first one in Korea.

These cute teddy bears will surely carry your thoughts back to childhood.
